Bell County Sheriff's Department is accepting applications for full time Jailers. Starting pay is $39,255.00.00/$18.80 per hour plus benefits of longevity pay, holiday pay, sick leave pay, retirement, and paid health/dental care insurance. DUTIES

Perform security duties maintaining order and physical custody of inmates in a jail system or courthouse complex. Responsible for the care, custody, and control of persons to include; releasing offenders, maintaining security of the facility, and escorting offenders within and/or outside the secure confines of the jail. No experience is required, but must have the ability to communicate effectively, handle stressful situations and work rotating days to include holidays and weekends. Duties consist of the care and custody of inmates and the operation of the corrections environment. This agency has direct and indirect supervision of inmates. QUALIFICATIONS

Jailers are licensed through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. The in depth state requirements can be found here.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or GED on date of hiring.

Must possess an a valid driver's license with the state of Texas (unless a military dependent, may use out of state DL) and a safe driving record.

Criminal background check is required. Applicants will go through phases to be considered for employment: background check, interview and Conditional Offer of Employment. The Conditional Offer of Employment is not a guarantee of employment but another testing phase for consideration of the job performances.

TCOLE Disqualifiers

Persons that have been convicted of an offense above the grade of Class B misdemeanor in the past ten years will not be considered for employment.

Convictions of Class A or Felony cannot be considered.

Any level Class Misdemeanor or Felony involving Family Violence will not be considered.

Applicants who received a military discharge of dishonorable or other discharge based on
misconduct which bars future military service will not be considered for employment.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION:

-Provide direct and remote supervision of inmates within housing and other areas of a jail, and perform regular secure perimeter checks as assigned to maintain a safe and secure environment
-Conduct frequent security checks for evidence of unauthorized activities and infractions of rules, respond to situations, and document accordingly
-Receive and process inmates from officers and the courts, maintain inmates' property
-Conduct metal detection of individuals and materials before entering facilities, perform necessary searches for weapons and contraband, and completes reports
-Inspect cells, housing areas, locks, windows, grills, doors, gates and perimeters of buildings and grounds for security purposes
-Observe conduct and behavior of inmates, respond to and control emergency situations, and use appropriate levels of force to control combative, volatile, or hostile offenders
-Documents numerous inmate activities such as, visitation, phone calls, incidents, movement, housing assignments, property, etc.
-Provides information in regards to daily activities
-Supervise inmates and trustee-inmates work crews
-Conduct head counts to ensure that each prisoner is present
-Inspect conditions of locks, window bars, grills, doors, and gates at correctional facilities to ensure security and help prevent escapes
-Inspect mail for the presence of contraband
-Supervise the dispensing of food in a timely fashion to inmates, ensuring all health and safety regulations are complied with
-Regular attendance and timeliness are required


SKILLS:

-Ability to work in a hostile environment of inmates and visitors without reacting in a negative manner and project a professional image at all times
-Exceptional skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with County staff, inmates, police departments and the public
-General knowledge of basic hardware and software and uses of a variety of different computer operating systems such as Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Outlook
-Be able to train/use specific jail software
-Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of goals
-Must be able to pass a physical agility test and be able to make sound judgment decisions
-Ability to supervise emergency situations, make effective decisions under stressful situations, and direct the use of physical force necessary to protect oneself and others
-Keen attention to detail; careful and accurate data entry

Preferred:
Working knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of modern inmate care, custody, and control, and related state, federal, and department laws, rules, regulations, standards, and policies governing the operation of detention facilities
Working knowledge of local, state, and federal laws governing the criminal justice system
Working knowledge of how to search for and recognize contraband and weapons

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:

Contact with "at risk" persons who could be adjudicated of misdemeanor and felony offenses, visitors and general public
Contact may occur with individuals with communicable diseases (Universal Precaution is practiced in our facility)
Work is performed mostly indoors in a 24-hour/7-day confined, security facility
Climate-controlled environment. Significant contact with the public, elected officials, department heads, and other County employees

PHYSICAL DEMAND REQUIREMENTS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear and may on occasion have to exert energy to help control a situation
The employee frequently is required to stand; The employee is occasionally required to walk; sit; use hands to find, handle, or feel objects, reach with hands and arms; stoop and kneel
Must be able to complete our agility test (this is done with an outside vendor that we pay for)
Individual must be able to physically avoid combative or aggressive inmates and may occasionally become involuntarily engaged with combative inmates
Employees are expected to use de-escalation training techniques to help reduce the physical combativeness


HOURS / SPECIAL CONDITIONS: Must be willing to work overtime, weekends, holidays, rotating days off, evenings and nights. At this time, we have 8 hour shifts.
